Inspired by nature, I explore the metaphysical connections between a specific location and a particular moment in time when the light and ambience of the surroundings touch me. These are remembered moments distilled into an abstract language of colors, shapes, energy, rhythm and mood. I work until the right moment is released and I have achieved the desired affect—sometimes in quick strokes and at other times adding paint and wiping it off, pushing and pulling my materials. These processes evolve during the course of many sessions, as the poetry of rhythm and forms unfolds, moving across the canvas or paper in the same way music improvised by a jazz musician progresses. I compose spontaneously, capturing the luminosity of light with my color choices and amplifying movement and energy with aggressive mark making. The fluid shapes I make with my brush are often juxtaposed against crisp lines I make with graphite or charcoal. Like the Abstract Expressionists of the New York School, my art is process driven. The plasticity and immediacy of the paint drive my expression and capture the unconscious.
